How to do it

Write one hook line and put it at the top on its own

A claim, a number, a mistake or a question. Not a greeting. If you cannot say it in about three seconds it is too long to open with.

Keep the whole script under a minute of speech

Roughly 75 to 90 words is thirty seconds at a normal talking pace. Write it, say it against a timer, then cut rather than speeding up.

Switch to portrait 9:16 before the final draft

A vertical frame changes how much you can show with your hands and how close you need to sit, so frame it first and let the script fit the frame.

Use overlay mode so the script sits over the camera view

That is the default on phones. You read and film on one screen, so there is no second device to prop up and no reason for your eyes to leave the frame.

Push the reading area towards the top of the screen

The front camera on a phone sits along the top edge. Text near the top keeps your eyes close to the lens. Text parked in the middle of the screen is what makes people look like they are reading something just under your chin.

Record, watch it back, and reshoot the first three seconds

The opening is worth a second take on its own. Everything after it is usually fine as recorded.

What actually makes the difference

·Keep lines to four to six words. A portrait frame is narrow, and a long line drags your eyes across the whole width of the phone, which is the most visible tell there is.
·Say it out loud before you type the final version. Anything with a subordinate clause in it will trip you on take one and again on take four.
·Prop the phone rather than holding it where you can. A held phone drifts, and drift costs more in portrait because there is so little frame to spare.
·Batch the writing. Five scripts in one sitting and one filming session in the same light and the same clothes is how people sustain a daily posting rhythm without it eating the day.
·Do not make the spoken hook and the on-screen caption identical word for word. The video reads as duplicated and there is nothing left to reward reading it.
·One take usually beats a perfect take. A delivery that is slightly rough tends to outperform the fifth attempt, which sounds recited.
